Saycool’s M5A 5 inch Atom-powered Windows 7 tablet emerges on the FCC

image

Shenzhen-based Saycool passed a tablet computer called the M5A, pictured above, through the FCC today.  The device actually sports a decent feature set that includes a 5” touch screen with an 800 x 480 resolution, Intel Atom Z515 processor, Intel GMA500 graphics, between 8 to 32GB of storage, external storage via SD, 0.3MP webcam, Bluetooth and 802.11b/g WiFi.

The M5A will run Windows 7, as pictured below.  In addition to its touch screen, the device can be controlled by what appears to be an optical mouse with left and right mouse buttons placed on the left hand side of the device.

The M5A weighs in at 12.3 ounces with battery, and measures 6.3” x 3.7” x 0.9”.  That makes the device a bit too large to comfortably pocket, but definitely portable enough to fit in a small bag or purse.

We’re not sure how usable Windows 7 will be on a 5” touch screen, and the device does appear to be a bit bulky, especially when compared to other tablets.  We’re also not sure if, or when the M5A will make it to the United States – currently Saycool’s products are only available in the US on a limited basis through importers.

We’ll keep you updated as we learn more.

Fusion Garage’s JooJoo tablet spotted running Windows 7

image

We discovered that the JooJoo Tablet could run Windows Vista when the device first passed through the FCC.  At that time, test photos showed the JooJoo with Windows Vista and what appeared to be a WiFi diagnostics screen (below left).

Well yesterday, on The JooJoo Forum, an innovative modder appears to have put Windows 7 on a JooJoo, complete with a touch screen interface (above).

As you can see in the YouTube vid below, Windows 7 runs pretty smoothly, even in an aviary.  The JooJoo does tend to run hot, however, and the accelerometer doesn’t work at all.  Multi-touch works pretty well, although it does seem to be a bit difficult to interact with Windows 7’s menus with fingers.

Want to turn your JooJoo into a Windows 7 tablet?  You can find instructions here.

JooJoo tablet spotted running Windows Vista

Not feeling the JooJoo tablet’s Linux-based OS?  Well you may be in luck.  Test setup photos for the JooJoo tablet show the device running Windows Vista, above.  That’s not a huge stretch, since the device relies on an Intel Atom N270 processor and Nvidia Ion GPU.

Although driver support may be an issue at first, we’d expect that it won’t be long before the JooJoo pad is hacked to run your favorite version of Windows.  We do wonder however, how useful Windows will be on the JooJoo given the device’s small 4 GB SSD.

Update:  Silly us – the pic above shows the JooJoo running Windows Vista, not Windows 7.

Microsoft-designed tablet shows up on FCC

image

Cnet published an interesting article today about how Windows division President Steven Sinofsky worked with Acer to design an ideal Windows 7 notebook.  Coincidentally, that notebook, called the Aspire 1420P, showed up on the FCC website today as well.

The 1420P is a tablet that is designed to leverage the multitouch capabilities built into Windows 7.  The device features VGA and HDMI outputs, multicard reader, a/b/g/n WiFi, 3G WWAN, Bluetooth, and webcam.

Although the Sinofsky designed 1420P rocks an Intel Celeron mobile processor, the notebook is also available with Core 2 Duo or Pentium mobile processors.  The tablet comes with 4 GB of RAM, which can be upgraded to 8 GB.

The highlight of the tablet is a 11.6” 1366×768 touchscreen display.  However, integrated Mobile Intel GS45 graphics are a bit disappointing.

No word on pricing or a release date for the 1420P Series, which Acer also sells as the Aspire 1820PT.

Archos 9 priced, torn down

image

We’ve been waiting for the Archos 9 for a few months now.  The original October 22nd release date has passed, but at least today we have some info on pricing.  The Archos 9 is now available for pre-order on Archos’ website for $549.99.  Still, there is no word on when the device will be released.

Additionally, internal pics of the device are now available on the FCC website.  The pics show a Broadcom WiFi module, and Toshiba HDD (although SSD options are available as well).

The Windows 7 tablet looks quite impressive, although the Archos 9’s 1.1 GHz Atom processor seems a bit underpowered.  Archos says the 9 is capable of displaying 1080p video though, so it’ll be interesting to see this device in action.
