The One Laptop per Child project promises to develop low cost PCs, and make these PCs accessible to children in developing countries.  The first generation of the OLPC, known as the OLPC XO-1, was released in 2007.  In 2009, an updated version of the device, known as the OLPC XO-1.5 was released.  Thanks to the FCC, we can take a good look at the innards of the XO-1.5, and see what this low-cost, low-power PC is made of.

OLPC XO-1.5 makes an appearance on the FCC, nearing release?

The OLPC XO-1.5 was first announced in early 2009, and since then prototypes of the device were released to testers and developers.  However, the XO-1.5 was not released in late 2009 as expected, and we haven’t heard much about the device in several months…until today.

Thanks to a filing by Quanta Computer, it does appear that the OLPC XO-1.5 is closer to release.  The filings include label pics of the device (left), as well as a test report that shows support for 802.11 b/g.

Other specs for the XO-1.5 that have already been released include a VIA C7-M processor, 1 GB of RAM and 4 GB of storage.  The VIA chipset will also feature a 3D graphics engine and HD video decoder.

There is no word on the availability of the XO-1.5, but today’s FCC filing is a good indication that the device is close to being released.  The device is also expected to have a price in the $100 range.
