Finally, the Motorola Droid 2 leaks can end. Verizon finally made the device official today, with presales happening now, and in store pickups taking place on Thursday for a cool $200 with a two year contract. At this point, there’s not much about the device that we don’t already know – it will feature Android 2.2, a 3.7” display, 5MP camera, 8GB onboard memory with another 8GB available via microSD card, Flash Player 10.1 and wireless hotspot functionality for an additional $20 per month.
Better yet, those rumors of a R2-D2 version of the Droid 2 were legit. Check out this teaser site, and sign up for an email alert to be notified when this limited edition goes on sale. According to Engadget, the R2-D2 Droid 2 will be available in September.
That’s it folks…all that’s left is for you to pick one up on Thursday.
It looks like Droid X users may have to wait for another month to update to Android 2.2, aka Froyo. According to “Matt,” a Motorola employee on Motorola’s Droid X support forum, the Android 2.2 update is scheduled for deployment by “early September.” This timeframe does jive with other reports that the Android 2.2 update would be available by the end of Summer.
Matt posted this info in response to Microsoft Exchange 2003 notification problems posted on Motorola’s Droid X forums. You can check out the whole thread here.
It’s nice to finally get a Android 2.2 update timeframe from an actual Motorola employee. Especially after all the rumors than an OTA update for the Droid X was being rolled out last week.
Froyo update: Android 2.2 updates being pushed to HTC EVO 4G now, Droid updates coming later this week
Yes, it’s been a long wait for Android 2.2, aka Froyo, but it appears that many Android users will be getting their updates soon. Froyo updates are actually being pushed to some lucky HTC EVO 4G owners over the air right now – a day before the planned Froyo rollout.
Motorola Droid owners won’t have to wait much longer either. Updates for the Droid are “expected to begin the week of August 2nd", according to Motorola.
Droid X users may have a while longer to wait, however. According to Motorola, the Droid X won’t be getting Froyo until “late Summer.” Depending on how you define Summer, that could mean Droid X users don’t get an update until late September.
Rumors of a Samsung tablet have been floating around for the past few weeks, and according to the International Business Times the device will be formally unveiled by Samsung on August 11. According to the site, Samsung’s tablet will be known as the Galaxy Tab, with possible features including a 7” AMOLED display, Android 2.2 (aka Froyo), a 1.2GHz Samsung Hummingbird processor, 16GB of internal storage, microSD expandability, 3.2MP camera with flash and a front facing VGA camera.
Those specs don’t sound bad at all. However, it’s not yet clear if the Galaxy Tab will have wireless data capabilities, or if the device will be offered through wireless carriers. There is also no word on pricing yet.
The International Business Times is also reporting that Samsung plans to released 8” and 10” versions of the Galaxy Tab in November and December, respectively. That’s good news for customers unimpressed with the original rumors that the Galaxy Tab will only be available with a 7” screen.
If these rumors are correct, it should be a busy holiday season for tablets.
My, it has been a busy Friday for HTC. Earlier today, the company released an early build of the Froyo update for the HTC EVO 4G through a download link on HTC’s website. However, HTC quickly killed the download link, apparently because this Froyo update was not final.
While HTC’s link to the Froyo update is now dead, you can still download the update from a number of mirrors online, like this one. Again, update with this ROM at your own risk – it’s not final.
This update brings a number of new features, including the ability to use the EVO’s camera LED as a flashlight, the ability to use the LED flash with the video camera, Flash 10.1 support, and the ability to share applications.
If you don’t want to test the waters with this update, you can just wait until Tuesday, when the official Froyo update from HTC will go live.

Here’s some good news for Incredible, Droid and Droid X users: WareGround.com is reporting that a “Verizon tipster” has confirmed that these three smartphones will be bumped up to Froyo, aka Android 2.2, starting on August 6th, with all devices expected to be updated by August 15th. Who knows how reliable WareGround’s “Verizon tipster” is, but this evening Engadget reported that at least one Droid X user received an over-the-air update to Froyo.
We’re not particularly fond of the waiting-for-OTA-update-game, but it appears that this will be the case for many Android smartphone owners over the next two to three weeks. Be honest, how many times have you checked “Systems updates” so far?
