Casio’s Bluetooth 4.0 G-Shock watch hits the FCC, will be solar powered according to teardown photos

At CES this year Casio announced plans to release a watch with Bluetooth connectivity, and today the company passed a Bluetooth watch called the GB-6900 through the FCC.  The device features power-sipping Bluetooth 4.0 that, according to Casio, will last up to two years on a single battery assuming that Bluetooth communications are used for 12 hours per day.  FCC filings also show that the device will feature Casio’s Touch Solar technology that will recharge the watch when it is exposed to sun or artificial light.

So what will the GB-6900 do with its Bluetooth chops?  Casio’s prototype version of the device featured incoming call and email alerts, a finder function and wireless time synchronization via Bluetooth.  Casio is also working with third parties to develop sports, heath, home entertainment and communications applications for the device.  However, Casio has not yet announced what phones and/or mobile OSes will be compatible with the device.

So will Bluetooth finally be making its way to our wrists?  The GB-6900 certainly seems like a capable device, and it seems like Casio has solved many of the power consumption issues that can make Bluetooth impractical on watches.  It will also be interesting to see the partnerships that Casio lines up for the GB-6900 – it would be great to see a Casio app for iOS and Android devices.
