Ion Audio’s iCade iPad Arcade Cabinet hits the FCC, on schedule for May 31st launch

One of our favorite products at CES this year was Ion Audio’s iCade Arcade Cabinet for the Apple iPad, which passed through the FCC today.  The $100 cabinet essentially turns your iPad into a mini arcade system – just slide the iPad into the front of the console, connect to the iCade via Bluetooth, and you’re ready to play your favorite arcade classics.

The iCade features an arcade-style joystick, six numbered buttons and two “enter” buttons (in blue).  You can download free games for the iCade from Apple’s App Store.  The Atari Greatest Hits app is already configured to work with the iCade, and you can download additional games through the Atari Greatest Hits app.

Our only gripe with the iCade is its reliance on 2 AA batteries.  We would have loved to see a rechargeable option, although this oversight won’t keep us from picking one up.

You can preorder the iCade from GameStop here for $100.  The cabinet is expected to launch on May 31, 2011, and today’s FCC filing suggests the device is right on schedule.
