Netgear and Roku team up for the Roku XD Player. Is this a client/server home media streaming system?

We just spotted yet another Roku device on the FCC, but this time the box is made by networking equipment manufacturer Netgear, above right.  The box, known as the Roku XD Player, has the model number NTV250, and features 802.11 b/g/n wireless as well as HDMI, composite and Ethernet connectivity.

This is an interesting development, since we also just spotted a device on the FCC called the Roku XD, although this device has the model number 2050X, above left.  The distinction between Netgear’s Roku XD Player and the Roku XD device suggest that the Roku XD may be a client/server home media streaming platform, not just a single set top box like the Roku HD.

It appears that Roku may be up to something big here – we’ll keep you posted as we learn more.
