Sagem’s solar-powered Puma Phone leaps through the FCC

Sagem made quite an impression at CES this year with their Puma Phone.  Today, the device made its way through the FCC, giving us hope that the Puma Phone will make its way to the US soon.

The Puma Phone features a 2.8” touch screen with a 240 x 320 resolution, 3.2 MP rear-facing camera with LED Flash as well as a front facing camera, GPS and a media player.  The device also feature sporty features like a pedometer, GPS tracker and stopwatch.

FCC test reports indicates that the Puma Phone supports GSM bands 850, 900, 1800 and 1900, as well as WCDMA bands I and VIII.  That’s not great news for US users, since it means the Puma Phone will not have 3G coverage if it comes to the States.

image The Puma Phone runs a custom OS called ‘Red Carpet’.  While the OS’ red color scheme is a bit loud, it does provide what seems to be a simple to use, easily navigable interface with a hefty amount of Puma branding.  The OS also features ‘Dylan’, a virtual Puma that lives in the Puma Phone.

The most impressive feature of the Puma Phone can be seen by turning the device around.  A solar panel covers most of the device’s back, giving outdoorsy types the ability to charge their phone while out in the wild.  The Puma Phone also features a Solarometer, which keeps track of activity powered by the sun.

The Puma Phone is scheduled for an April release in Europe, with international markets following later.  You can sign up to be notified on the device’s release here.  No word on pricing.
