Feature-packed Pioneer AVIC-X920BT nav unit offers Pandora, MSN Direct support

Pioneer showed off its AVIC-X920BT nav system at CES this year, and yesterday the unit made an appearance on the FCC.  The unit offers a rich suite of audio, video, wireless and navigation features, along with support for Sirius XM satellite radio and HD Radio.

The face of the AVIC-X920BT is dominated by a 6.1” touch screen.  Hard buttons line the left side of the device, with a microSD card slot available at the top right.  A SD card slot is revealed when the face of the AVIC-X920BT is lowered and USB flash drives are supported with a wired dongle.  The unit also has 4GB of internal storage.

The AVIC-X920BT offers tight iPod/iPhone integration through a wired connector.  The device has an iPod-style interface and can also play video from iPods.  The AVIC-X920BT can play DVDs or DivX video files, as well.

Bluetooth support on the AVIC-X920BT allows the unit to pair with Bluetooth phones or A2DP audio sources.  The unit has an on-screen dialing feature and also supports voice commands.  Phonebooks can be transferred to the AVIC-X920BT via Bluetooth, as well.

The navigation features of the AVIC-X920BT are pretty standard.  One interesting addition is support for MSN Direct, which gives users access to real-time traffic data, weather, gas prices, movie show times, stock prices, news and local events.

imageThose of you with iPhones will also love the AVIC-X920BT’s support for Pandora.  The unit uses the Internet connection and Pandora app on iPhones to play Pandora music.  The AVIC-X920BT also shows Pandora information such as album artwork, artist, song title, etc.

Overall we’re impressed at the AVIC-X920BT’s tight iPod/iPhone integration and connectivity features.  Sure, it’d be great if this unit had an Internet connection of its own, but the use of an iPhone’s 3G connection isn’t a bad workaround.  The AVIC-X920BT could also use a web browser and we’re not quite convinced that MSN Direct is the best source of mobile data, but at this point the AVIC-X920BT is one of the most feature-packed nav units that we’ve seen to date.

The AVIC-X920BT will be available in March for around $1,200.

Update:  This post previously referred to the AVIC-Z120BT.  However, Pioneer’s Corporate Communications department informed us that the unit that passed through the FCC is actually the AVIC-X920BT, which was introduced at CES on January 6.  References to the AVIC-Z120BT in this post have therefore been replaced with the AVIC-X920BT.
